Jaw coupling

The jaw coupling is a general-purpose power transmission coupling that can also be used in motion control (servo) applications. It is designed to transmit torque (by connecting two shafts) while dampening system vibration and accommodating misalignment, protecting other components from damage. A claw coupling consists of two metal hubs, and an elastomer insert called an element but often called a “spider.” The three sections are press-fitted together with the lower jaws of each hub, mounted alternately with the spider’s blades. Jaw coupling torque is transmitted through compressed elastomer blades.

Spider’s elastomers can be made in different materials and hardnesses, which allows users to customize the coupling to best serve their application. Elastomer selection considerations include the ability to dampen vibration, the ability to handle misalignment, operating temperature range, equipment speed, and chemical conditions.

Jaw couplings are considered “fail-safe” because if the elastomer fails or wears out, the jaw coupling hub teeth will match up just like the teeth on both gears and continue to transmit torque. Depending on the application, this may or may not be desirable for the user.

The claw coupling elastomer is a wear element that needs to be inspected and replaced. Jaw coupling elastomers often have a characteristic wear pattern, and failures are often caused by the condition of the elastomer and hub. Common failure causes include misalignment, over-torque, chemical exposure, temperature exposure, torsional vibration, and hub failure.

Jaw couplings are available in straight and curved jaw designs. Straight tooth design enables radial attachment and removal of elastomers, including a “non-fail safe” jaw elastomer shear design. For internal elastomer shear designs, the coupling hub teeth no longer mesh with each other, so elastomer failure will result in no torque transfer. When used with rigid elastomers, the curved jaw design maintains the zero-backlash fit required for many motion control applications.

Zero Backlash Bending Jaw Couplings are best for applications that rely on stop-and-go motion, where accuracy is required at the stop for any number of precision tasks, such as taking high-resolution photos (machine vision system). Absorbing vibrations reduces the settling time required for the system, thereby increasing throughput. Claw couplings are less suitable for applications that rely on the type of constant sweep motion where precision is required during motion, which requires a more torsional coupling.

Like other elastic couplings, claw couplings are limited in the shaft misalignment they can accommodate. Excessive axial movement can cause couplings to separate, while excessive angular or parallel misalignment can cause bearing loads that can lead to premature system wear or failure.
